Title: Time Square, New York ~ an original acrylic painting #art

By Peter Threlfall, Carnforth, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Painted in rich and vibrant, textural, acrylics, this is one of Peter's many Cityscape paintings.

Image size 12cm x 12cm, mounted in white, finished size 23cm x 23cm , unframed .

My husband and I have travelled to NYC together every spring for the past 6 years. We usually stay near Times Square. For us New York is all about the food, the people and the vibe.

About the artist: “Having worked as a commercial artist since leaving college I use my knowledge of perspective, colour and space within my paintings. I have been strongly influenced by the work of the French Impressionists, and Turner but also by more contemporary works by Howard Hodgkin. I use a mixture of brush and palette knife, but am not afraid to use my hands and fingers to manipulate and merge the paint. To create added texture, I also like to experiment with adding sand, sawdust, grit, fibres and more recently seeds to the paint..” ~ Peter Threlfall

Untitled (Red Tulips) Realism, Oil on Canvas #art

By: Tatjana Ruzin, Mississauga, Ontario

Original oil painting on canvas board, 100% hand painted signed on front & back and including Certificate of authenticity

size: 10"X8" ,   Style: Realism

I love tulips and already have a collection of 3 tulip paintings from various artists hanging together in my home. They work wonderfully as a “set” and I think this one will complement the grouping as well.

About the artist:

“She was born and raised in former Yugoslavia. Her first drawings of portraits and paintings started in her early age inspired by the river banks nearby the city she was born. Following her path she graduated from the School of Art for graphical design on 1979 in Novi Sad.

In 1982 she completed the College of Fine Art in Belgrade and started working as an art teacher immediately after graduation. Besides teaching, she worked as an illustrator for children stories and poems. She also did artwork such as murals, illustrations, brochures, sculptures, mosaics and logos.  She used techniques such as pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics and oils. <snip> In 1993 she immigrated to Canada.”

By Irina Akimova

This is a signed painting. This work of art was created with watercolours and coloured pencils on w/c paper.

Size: approx. 5"x7"

Tulips are one of my favourite subjects for art. This will be the 4th tulip painting in my collection. Three of them are already hanging together in my kitchen (one ACEO is by Akimova and also has a dark background like this one). I did buy one other lovely tulip in the past but I gifted that one to a good friend. My taste have expanded beyond florals recently but I still can't resist a pretty tulip.

This work of art was created with watercolours and gouache on watercolour paper.

"I was born in Russia, graduated from Moscow State University. In 2004 I went to graduate school at Virginia Tech, and in May 2006 I received my Master's degree in ... mathematics. I have two sons and a daughter and every day try to get time for painting or drawing." ~ Irina Akimova     http://irinart.ucoz.com/

I have purchase a few of Irina's paintings in the past and I was thrilled to stumble upon a few more that tickled my fancy. It's usually more economical to purchase several paintings at once from the same artist to benefit from reduced shipping rates. In this transaction, shipping costs was $6.50 for the first one...the additional shipping costs for more paintings was only $1 each.  I bought 4... This one "Fern" but also "Pumpkin, "Poinsettia" and "Tulips". Stay tuned in the days ahead to see them all. Many artists stick with one medium, technique or subject and so it's fairly easy to recognize their work. Irina Akimova's paintings have different themes, colours and styles. This is one of the things I like about her work.

Title: BINDWEED #art

by John Wright, Nottingham, United Kingdom
http://johnwrightart.blogspot.com/

Size: 16' x 20"

Original acrylic on stretched canvas signed by the artist.

It's been months since I've purchased any art off ebay. Most of my wall space is now spoken for and then some. To fuel my habit I continued to purchase and give the paintings as gifts or donate to Charity Auctions. Slowly I weaned myself off of the habit. BUT...A friend and I recently went on a local gallery hop and it inspired me to take another look on-line. No one can accuse me of being an "art snob" as I cannot bring myself to pay the big bucks just because it's a "well known" artist. I love to troll ebay for unknown artists. Some of these budding artists are very talented. You could say I don't buy art as a financial "investment" but more as a personal investment!

Title: Downy Woodpecker Watercolor ACEO #art

by Janet Zeh, Willington, CT, United States

ACEO* original watercolor matted to 5"x 7"
*ACEO stands for Art Card Edition Original - miniature paintings that are 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. This item is an original painting.

I've purchased several small paintings from Janet over the past couple of years. She been doing many winter scenes with birds lately which I just adore. I have some bird feeders made of out recycled milk cartons hanging just outside my kitchen window and love to watch the chickadees and other birds enjoy what I've put out for them.

"A little downy woodpecker looks for insects in an old tree stump. This bird appears every once in a while at my bird feeder. Its habitat includes forests, woodlands, river groves and shade trees, all of which we have in abundance here!"~ Janet Zeh

Title: New York Pavements #art

by Edward Hopper

Art Reproduction 17.25" x 14.25"

Painted in 1924, the original can be found at The Chrysler Museum of Art: Norfolk, VA.

Edward Hopper was a quirky individuals (as many would say about most artists). Here is another passage I found online which makes reference to this particular painting:
"He lived and worked in the same walkup apartment in Washington Square [New York City] from 1913 until 1967. He ate almost every meal of his adult life in a diner. He never rode in a taxi. He loved the theater, but he always sat in the cheap seats. He never had any children with his wife, and he never included a single child in any of his paintings. The closest he came was a painting called 'New York Pavements', showing a nun pushing a baby carriage."

Title: Summertime #art

by Edward Hopper

Art Reproduction 17.25" x 11.25"

I bought a pair of Hopper prints off ebay a while back but I'm just getting around to posting them here. I was attracted to these because I found the architecture reminded me of buildings in Saint John. As well, I love that he included these wonderful characters. For me the piece is mostly about the building but the woman makes it so much more visually appealing.

Painted in 1943, the original can be found in the Delaware Art Museum

Excerpt from a bio on Hopper:
"His paintings combine apparently incompatible qualities. Modern in their bleakness and simplicity, they are also full of nostalgia for the puritan virtues of the American past - the kind of quirky nineteenth-century architecture Hopper liked to paint, for instance, could not have been more out of fashion than it was in the mid-192OS, when he first began to look at it seriously. Though his compositions are supposedly realist they also make frequent use of covert symbolism. " The entire bio can be found here: http://artchive.com/artchive/H/hopper.html#images

Title: Mindfulness, outsider art, original, acrylic #art

by Deborah South McEvoy

5" x 7 " original acrylic on canvas panel (companion piece to the painting I featured yesterday.)

The artist classified the style of these two works as "Outsider Art".

WHAT IS OUTSIDER ART?  The term outsider art is a synonym for art brut ("raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane-asylum inmates.

While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "outsider art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or "Naïve" art makers who were never institutionalized. Typically, those labelled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. Outsider art has emerged as a successful art marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1992). ~ Excerpts from Wikipedia

Title: Inhabit Wholeness, original, acrylic #art

by Deborah South McEvoy

5" x 7" original acrylic on canvas panel

ABOUT THE ARTIST   Deborah South McEvoy is a mixed media artist.  She was born in Akron, Ohio, grew up in Tempe/Scottsdale, Arizona, and now resides in Casa Grande, Arizona.  Her main concentration is in abstract art and her subjects may include nature, houses or the human form.  Primarily a self-taught artist, Deborah has taken several classes and courses in various aspects of art which attribute to the vastness of her concepts in her art. "ART is the life energy of the soul.  I want my audience to contemplate my pieces and arrive at their own meanings as they bring their unique life experiences to the viewing of the art."~ Deborah South McEvoy

Buying art on-line has it's downsides. It's a bit of a gamble. The computer monitor has it's limitations when it comes to art. It's not like going to a gallery and seeing the painting up close and personal. What if I'm disappointed when it arrives? The truth is I'm rarely disappointed! I LOVE the 3D layered effect of this piece and I have a feeling that a photo on a computer monitor doesn't do it justice. I can't wait to see it. Which brings me to the other downside...the waiting. Of course, after you purchase art off ebay you must wait. The shipping time varies but my purchases usually arrive in a couple or weeks. Now the waiting begins...

P.S. Since I can't get the instant gratification of buying and then taking it home and hanging it in my home, I write about it here.

Title: Tranquility, a trio of giclee & iris prints #art

by Arrachme

Set of 3 ACEO's  2.5 " x 3.5"

Giclee and Iris Prints

Arrachme's family is from Kashmir, India. She is a grandchild of the Brahman spiritual teacher named Parah. "Spiritual practice and an artist's life are a natural pairing". Arrachme says. In 1998, Arrachme moved to Asheville, N. C. and developed the first Internet driven tourism business of its kind. Its success afforded her the time to write an autobiographical novel, “Awakening Woo”. While illustrating the chapters, she discovered a powerful passion for painting.

Arrachme and her husband Peter travel back and forth between Asheville/Black Mountain, N.C. and their peaceful home in "The Villages" Florida where magic happens daily. Arrachme has a current copyright and the trade mark processing for The Tangible Visualization Process as it relates to the creation of art and visual manifestation from a spiritual perspective. And the miracles keep happening...[excerpt from artist's bio on ebay store].

The colours of this little trio caught my eye but the story of Arrachme really enchanted me...to read more about the artist visit...  http://members.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=arrachme_art   and more here http://www.arrachmeart.com/

Print from Original Oil Painting A SUNFLOWER FLOWER

I purchased 3 ACEO's yesterday off ebay. Something finally inspired me to buy... at $0.99 each it's difficult not to be inspired! I bought two by this artist, Iwona Jankowski, from Texas and one from Céu Palo from Brazil. All three ACEO's are prints. There was a time when I thought I had to have the original but the quality of prints these days is amazing. A local gallery here in Saint John sells ACEO prints for $15.00 each so at $0.99 a piece (plus a nominal shipping charge) these are a real steal.

Title: Wine Bottle

by Irina Akimova

3" x 5" original watercolour

I bought this little painting off ebay quite a while back. When it arrived I found it interesting but rather plain so didn't bother framing it. Just tucked it away in a drawer. Recently while trolling for new art on ebay I came across another, almost identical, painting by the same artist. I went back and compared the one I owned with the new own. There were some slight differences... In this one the top left side of the wine bottle just below the neck is white... in the second version it was green. I think it should be green...now I think mine is flawed...

"There is a great deal of poetry and fine sentiment in a chest of tea."  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I haven't purchased any new art in a while. It takes something unique to pique my interest these days. This little print caught my eye. The artist described the subject as "Fantasy". I can't wait for it to arrive. A computer monitor cannot do justice to a piece of art!

My winning bid on this painting was $0.01 Title: End of Winter #art

"I was born in Iran, Kermanshah, 1986. The second half of my life I entirely was busy with painting & photography. I have passed art study in Tehran, Iran. B.A. in graphic design & Student, M.A. in painting, University of Fine Art, Tehran, Iran." ~ vahir rostami  http://vahidrostami.aminus3.com/about/

Vahid had some other similar works starting at $9.99 with free shipping but this one was starting at $0.01. I was going away for the weekend and stuck a bid in for this piece and another one which was also starting at a penny. Both auction were closing while I was going to be away. I was outbid on the other one but luckily no one bid against me on this one. OK...I confess...I actually paid $8.01 US for the painting. Winning bid $0.01 + $8.00 shipping. The shipping charge within Canada was higher than normal for a painting of this size. When I asked why the shipping charge was so high he admitted that he padded the shipping cost on this one (and a few others) in order to be able to start the auctions at a penny. The terms of the auction were clear upfront and I was very pleased to win this little gem for $8.01 which would (according to his on-line gallery) normally retail for $30.
